What is hybrid publishing anyway?

Simply put, hybrid publishing is where the author pays a fee towards the costs of producing the book. Our aim is always that the author makes this fee back through our higher royalty rates on book sales.

The one-off fee covers editing and proofreading, typesetting and design, printing the books, distribution through global sales platforms and book marketing. After the book is published, your money can be recovered through direct sales and royalties.

How do I make money with Pete’s Press?

When your book is published, you receive 20 author copies. These are for you to keep, give away to friends or sell yourself. Most of our books retail for around C$20, and so selling your author copies will recover some of your original investment very quickly. If you would like more copies to sell, they can be bought from Pete’s Press at ‘cost price’ – the cost of physically printing them only – which in turn nets a 60-70% profit on copies you sell yourself.

On top of that, authors receive 60% royalties on book sales through Pete’s Press and 40-60% from online sales, platform-dependent. For comparison, traditional publishers rarely offer more than 10% royalties. Royalties will be paid monthly via etransfer.

These royalties are paid for ‘life’ as well, from as soon as the book is published – consider it a small form of passive income.

How will Pete’s Press showcase my work?

We know books.

Through our previous ventures running independent bookstores, we’ve gained considerable experience selling a huge range of books in all genres. We know the sorts of things customers look for, we stay up to date with current publishing trends, and we know how to market these successfully.

We also know indie authors. All our staff and freelancers are published authors and are still actively writing. If you are thinking of self publishing, Pete’s Press can help you navigate through the process with expert guidance.

Why is this better than traditional publishing?

Publishing can be a daunting and frustratingly slow process, but Pete’s Press aims to alleviate the common stresses. We won’t make you wait forever for a decision on your work, and the whole process from submissions to publication only takes six months.

This much faster turn-around also means our authors can begin to recuperate their investment as your books are on the market sooner rather than later.

What kind of marketing support does Pete’s Press provide?

We offer a variety of marketing services, including social media promotion through the Pete’s Press channels but also in collaboration with bookstores, book launch and author reading events, and assistance with building an author platform. The best sales person for your writing is yourself, and so our goal is to help authors reach as wide an audience as possible, and maximize the impact of their work. Your writing should be celebrated!

I am not in Saskatchewan, can I still talk to humans during the process?

Of course! Pete’s Press is with the author every step of the process. We believe clear communications and community support is vital to producing the best books. Our editors are available via phone, email or Zoom throughout the whole production process. And if you are in Saskatchewan, the contributors to the anthologies are encouraged to meet and get to know one another as well.
